Create a Brand Board with Canva

What is a Brand Board? How do I make one?

Use Canva templates to create your company brand board

What is a brand board?

A Brand Board, also known as a Mood Board or Style Guide, is a visual reference for your brand. It is used to identify the overall feel of your brand while establishing guidelines. Brand Boards provide uniformity and consistency.

Is having a brand board important?

Yes, having a Brand Board is crucial for maintaining consistency and avoiding chaos in your brand image. If you don't have one, I highly recommend creating one or hiring a designer to do so.

A Brand Board will streamline your branding efforts and prevent confusion. Personally, I've struggled with not having a Brand Board before and wasted months trying to create marketing materials that never quite aligned with my brand. This, in turn, hindered my brand development and awareness.

Is creating a Brand Board challenging?

The level of difficulty depends on your design skills. For those who find design work challenging, there are solutions available.

You can create your Brand Board from scratch, use pre-made templates like the free ones available on Canva, or seek the assistance of a branding specialist.

What should be included in a Brand Board?

While there may be variations, most Brand Boards typically contain:

Logo This one is pretty essential. A logo is your brand, your identity. Your demographic will remember you from your logo because it helps them separate you from your competition. Now, technically there are logo generators out there, but.. you know what, try them out and see how you feel about them. I don't want to tell you what to do with your life. My only comment is that its truly not worth your time. I've tried for a reasonable amount of time to get something decent and 100% lost that battle.

Color Palette You'll want to select 5 to 10 colors to aid in brand recognition. The colors will be used for internal and external marketing. Adobe has pre-made color palette combinations to get you started or use at your leisure. Type in a subject or phrase or favorite color, animal, etc. to see the selection options. Use the CREATE tab to extract colors from your own photos to develop your customized color palette.

Make sure your font is web safe. A Web Safe font ensures your website stays UX focused. Hubspot has an extensive list of fonts to use, but more of the commonly used font faces are Helvetica, Times New Roman, and Arial.

The inspiration part of your board allows you to be as creative as you'd like. You can add photos, graphics, illustrations, quotes, phrases and anything else that reminds you why you started your company. It should embody your mission statement and how you want to be presented to the world.

Here's an example of a tester board I made for reference. Before the execution of my brand board, I spent time researching concepts/ideas that I thought would convey my brands core message.

If you find yourself struggling a bit, that's okay. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! :)
